The weather conditions made a massive impact on Round 5 of the Friday Night Summer Series MTB race at Mowsley, Leicestershire.
Heavy rain during the week meant that the original course was waterlogged. With a couple of the earlier rounds already been lost to the weather the Haines family and Leicestershire County Council went to great lengths to provide another venue and a race.
A strong westerly wind caused havoc with the course markings and also made racing a strong challenge on a hilly course.
After a torrid day, over 80 riders took to the start line ready for battle around a 2km course with over £600 in prize money in various categories up for grabs.
From the start Cycle Shack – Frome Coaching rider Dan Fleeman left everyone in his wake as the Elite MTB rider produced a real master class and solo’ed to a fine victory nearly 3 minutes in front of Geoff Beetham , Retrobike.co.uk, and series regular Nigel Scott. Joe Norledge ,Velo 29, was 4th.
Leading WVCC rider was Hans van Nierop in 14th. Ahead of Neil Doherty 19th
The Under 23’s race there was a tight 3 way battle that went all the way to the finish line. Ben Roff , Orange Monkey Cannondale, took the verdict by 10 seconds from Richard Jones , XC Racer.com/Numplumz, and Sam Sayers , Lutterworth Cycle Centre.
Holly Bettles, AJ Cycles, got the better of Fern Henry , Specialized Concept Store. Both ladies were locked in battle till Holly found another gear and move steadily clear of Fern in the last quarter of the race.
In third place was Roz Giles , Numplumz, who once again produced a strong performance.
Cycle Shack – Frome team enjoyed success in the Veterans and Veterans Over 50 classifications.
In the veterans race Nick Popham set a fast pace from the start and consistent lap times to finish ahead of John Smith , Numplumz/Billsons Steel, and John Fettis , Corely Cycles. to win by 6min. £30 prize.
Welland Valley CC’s Chris Begley was 7th, Adrian Killworth 10th and Andrew Wood 15th.
Ian Wright was also a clear winner of the Over 50’s race from Tim Stowe , MI Racing.
Welland Valley CC occupied the next two spaces in an intense battle both Vic Barnett and Steve Bunn went into the red as they sprinted up the last climb to secure the last spot on the podium. Vic ,Over 60’s National Champion, took the verdict by 2 seconds from Steve.
Welland Valley CC / Whizz Kids took a clean sweep of all the Youth prizes. Jake Hubbard is producing some fine results both on / off road and once again produced an excellent performance to beat Louis Killworth and Josh van Nierop. First Youth female was Katie Hubbard.
A special mention to uni-cyclist James Sandercock who finished the race completing 5 tough laps.
